What We Believe

"I decided to know nothing among you except Jesus Christ and him crucified." – 1 Corinthians 2:2

Core Beliefs

The following are the core beliefs of Pompey Community Church - NY based on the foundational truths taught in the bible. All of our teaching and ministry is rooted in and flows out of these biblical doctrines.

Scripture

We believe in the verbal plenary inspiration of the original writings of the Old and New Testaments and we believe that they are of supreme and final authority for faith and life.

2 Tim 3:16; 2 Pet 1:21; 3:16; Jn 14:26; 16:13; 1 Tim 5:18; Lk 24:27–44

God

There is one eternally existing God who has three distinct persons: God the Father, God the Son, and God the Holy Spirit. He is the creator of all that exists, both visible and invisible, and is therefore worthy of all glory and praise. God is perfect in love, power, holiness, goodness, knowledge, wisdom,  justice, and mercy. He is unchangeable and therefore is the same yesterday, today, and tomorrow.

1 Cor 8:4–6; Ps 90:2; Ac 5:3–4; Rev 1:8; Heb 9:14; Matt 3:16–17; 28:19

Jesus Christ

Jesus Christ was conceived by the Holy Spirit, born of the virgin Mary, and in him perfect humanity and undiminished deity are united forever. We believe that Jesus died on the cross, was raised from the dead three days later, ascended bodily into the presence of God in Heaven, and lives there now to intercede on our behalf.

Lk 1:27, 31, 35; Jn 1:1, 14; Col 2:9; Heb 2:14, 17; Phil 2:8; 1 Cor 15:3–4; Rom 8:34; Lk 24:51

The Holy Spirit

The Holy Spirit is the third person of the Trinity, sent to guide, teach, and empower the believer and to convict people of sin and the need for salvation. It is only by his indwelling that the Christian is enabled to live a Christ-like life.

Jn 14:16–17; 16:7–15; Ac 1:8; 5:3–4

Man

We believe that man was created by God and in God's image. We believe that man sinned by disobeying God and thus incurred spiritual death, which is separation from God and physical death. We believe that man is affected by this sin in such a way that no human being on his own has any merit before God.

Gen 1:27; 2:17; 3:6–8, 19; Rom 5:12; Eph 2:1–2; Rom 3:9–12; 7:17–18; Eph 4:18

Salvation

We believe that the death and resurrection of Jesus Christ took place so that man might be reconciled unto God. We believe that anyone who believes in Jesus Christ as personal Savior receives right standing before God and eternal life. We believe that a true believer, once saved, will be kept in his salvation by the power of God forever.

1 Pet 2:24; Rom 4:25; 2 Cor 5:18; Jn 6:47; Ac 16:31; Rom 3:20–22; 8:29, 35, 38–39

The Church

We believe that the Church consists of all Christians with Christ as the head. We believe that the purpose of the Church is to glorify God by drawing together, through the world-wide proclamation of the Word of God, all who will believe in Jesus Christ as Savior, and by building up each Christian so that he becomes progressively Christ-like. We believe that each Christian has at least one specific gift given by the Holy Spirit and one or more specific positions of service by God. Each gift and position is necessary for fulfilling the purpose of the Church. We believe that groups of local Christians should meet together regularly for worship, study, service, and fellowship.

Ac 2:47; Eph 1:22–23, 4:7, 11–16; Rom 8:29–30; 1 Cor 12:4–6, 11, 12, 18–27; Rom 12:3–8; Ac 2:42; Heb 10:25

The Future

We believe in the imminent and personal return of Jesus Christ and the bodily resurrection of the saved and the unsaved. We believe in the eternal blessedness of the saved and the eternal punishment of the unsaved.

1 Thess 4:16–17; Ja 5:8; Rev 20:10–15; 22:20; Jn 5:28–29; 1 Jn 3:2; Rev 19:20
